Yearly Review: Approved Technical Grade Active Ingredients(TGAIs) in China for 2023

Since the release of the new pesticide management regulations in 2017, the number of newly registered TGAIs in China has been consistently declining each year. CIRS group has compiled a year-end review, providing a reference for the newly registered TGAIs in China as of December 10th, 2023.

Prior to 2017, the annual new registered pesticide TGAIs in China ranged from 200 to 400. After 2019, following the requirements of the new regulations, the number of approved TGAIs ranged from 10 to 70 annually. The figure below shows the yearly registered number of TGAIs from 2019 to 2023.

According to the China pesticide information network, a total of 69 technical products have been registered in 2023 before December 10th, 2023 (including 15 technical products from the 12th batch of publicly announced products, and excluding 35 technical products intended for export only registration). The detailed information on the types of pesticide and number of new registered technical products in China for 2023 is provided in the table below:

According to statistics of active ingredients registered, the registration number of prothioconazole technical is ten, which is the most registered technical material for both last year and this year. Chlorantraniliprole has eight registrations, which is also one of the most popular registered technical materials like last year. What’s more, this year glufosinate-P has nine registrations and ranking as the second-highest registered active ingredient. Topramezone has seven registrations, ranking as the fourth-highest registered active ingredient this year. The number of registrations of other products range from 1 to 3.

In terms of pesticide types, a total of 24 herbicide technical were registered in 2023, while the number of registrations for fungicide and insecticide technical material were both 17.

According to the statistics from manufacturers, Shandong Aokun Crop Science Co., Ltd. Obtained three active ingredients: topramezone, prohexadione-calcium, and cyflumetofen. Shaanxi Meibang Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. obtained three active ingredients registration: cyflumetofen, glufosinate-P, and triacontanol. These two companies stood out as the manufacturers with the most number of technical products in 2023.

In terms of the statistics of new active ingredients, a total of 9 new active ingredients were registered as pesticides in China for 2023, except for the exemption registration of the active ingredient nosema locustae PL-GM1, which was registered only as a formulated product, the other eight products were registered technical and formulated products at the same time. The information of active ingredients are as follows: Ceriporia lacerata GXMS1、 Anagrapha falcifera nucleopolyhedrovirus, (AnfaNPV)Kew1、Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleo polyhedro virus Hub1、Trichoderma harzianum DS-10、Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HT2003、cyclobutrifluram、Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SN16-1、(E,Z)-7,9-Dodecadienyl acetate、nosema locustae PL-GM1 (exemption registration for technical product). Among these registrated products, only one new chemical pesticide active ingredient, cyclobutrifluram, the other products are classified as microbial pesticide or biochemical pesticide.

According to the information from the China pesticide information network, as of December 10, 2023, a total of 69 technical products have been officially registered (including 15 technical products from the 12th batch of publicly announced products). In addition to the officially registered technical products, there are also 35 products that have obtained registration of technical product exclusively for exporting.
